Cowrie was founded on a simple observation: the most accomplished people in our community are also the most underserved by modern dating.
Our community is the African diaspora in its full breadth — African American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latino, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-European, and continental African. What unites us isn't a passport. It's the interior life of navigating Black identity in a predominantly non-Black professional world, a complex relationship with cultural heritage and family expectation, and the desire for a partner who understands that experience from the inside.
Our name references the cowrie shell — a pan-African symbol of love, wealth, and destiny carried across West, East, Central, and Southern African cultures, and across the diaspora that grew from them. It is a small, beautiful, deliberate object. That is the bar we hold ourselves to for every introduction we make.
